For a long time this knowledge passed quietly from teacher to student, often within families or small circles, without the uniforms, belts, or public schools we associate with karate now. The figure most responsible for changing that was Gichin Funakoshi, an Okinawan schoolteacher and karate man who, in the early decades of the 20th century, introduced the art to mainland Japan. In demonstrations in the 1920s and the founding of instruction on the mainland, Funakoshi and his contemporaries reframed a local Okinawan practice as a Japanese martial art, or budo, complete with the etiquette, ranking, and training structure borrowed from Japanese systems like judo.

On the mainland, karate crystallized into the major styles that competitors and hobbyists still name today. Funakoshi's teaching is associated with the long, powerful stances of Shotokan; other lineages produced Goju-ryu with its close-range circular methods and breathing, Shito-ryu, Wado-ryu, and more. Each style codified its own catalogue of kata, the solo forms that store technique and principle in a memorized sequence.

The decades after the Second World War carried karate around the planet. American servicemen stationed in Japan and Okinawa trained and brought it home; Japanese and Okinawan instructors emigrated to teach; and film and television turned the word "karate" into shorthand for Eastern martial arts generally. Competition formats developed alongside, splitting broadly into point-based sport karate and full-contact variants. That momentum culminated in karate's appearance at the Olympic Games, a milestone that confirmed its status as a truly global sport even as traditionalists debated what standardization does to an art born in small Okinawan courtyards.
