What It Is

HEMA, Historical European Martial Arts, is the modern effort to reconstruct and practice the fighting systems of Europe's past. In the German-speaking lands, a body of teaching descends from the master Johannes Liechtenauer, whose late-medieval longsword system was transmitted through a lineage of masters who wrote commentaries and treatises explaining his compressed verse instructions. In Italy, the master Fiore dei Liberi produced, around the turn of the 15th century, a richly illustrated treatise covering sword, dagger, spear, poleaxe, and wrestling, one of the most complete early fighting manuals to survive. These were not theoretical exercises; they were professional knowledge, set down by men who taught knights, soldiers, and duelists.

Over the following centuries the manuals kept coming, tracking the evolution of European combat. As plate armor and knightly warfare gave way to gunpowder, the emphasis shifted. Renaissance masters, especially in Italy and later across Europe, produced detailed systems for the rapier, the elegant civilian dueling sword, and for sword and dagger. Into the 17th and 18th centuries the manuals documented smallsword, backsword, and broadsword methods. But as formal dueling faded, firearms dominated the battlefield, and sport fencing evolved into its own specialized pursuit, the older combative systems gradually lost their living practitioners. By the 19th century, much of this knowledge survived only as ink on brittle pages in libraries and archives, no longer taught as a continuous art.

The revival is a recent story. Scattered antiquarian interest existed earlier, but the modern HEMA movement really took shape from the late 20th century and accelerated dramatically in the 2000s. Several forces converged: dedicated researchers began seriously translating and analyzing the source manuscripts, many of those sources were digitized and shared freely online, and a growing community formed to compare interpretations across borders. Crucially, the movement insisted on testing. Rather than treating the manuals as museum pieces, practitioners tried to make the techniques work under pressure, refining their readings whenever the sparring floor contradicted the page.

Development Over Time

From those beginnings HEMA has grown into an organized international activity with clubs across Europe, North America, and beyond. Scholarship and practice have matured together. Better translations, cross-referencing between manuscripts, and open debate have steadily improved the collective understanding of what the masters actually meant. Alongside the study, a competitive side has developed, with longsword and other weapons contested in tournaments using protective gear and rule sets designed to reward historically sound technique while keeping fighters safe. The gear itself has advanced considerably, from improvised early kit to purpose-built masks, gloves, and jackets. Throughout, a healthy tension persists between the tournament-focused wing and the source-focused wing, a productive argument about whether the goal is winning bouts or faithfully recovering a historical art.

For the wider fight world it offers a reminder that Europe possessed sophisticated, systematic fighting arts long before modern sport codified them, and that even a dead tradition can be brought back to life when the evidence is read carefully and tested honestly. That marriage of the archive and the sparring ring is what gives HEMA its distinctive appeal.
