What It Is

Ninjutsu is unusual among martial arts because winning a fight was never really its point. These documents are the closest thing we have to primary sources, and they portray ninjutsu less as a single named martial art than as an accumulated body of practical knowledge for operating behind enemy lines.

Much of the popular image of the black-clad ninja, it should be said, took shape well after the shinobi's heyday, growing out of theater, folklore, and later popular culture. Separating the historical practitioner from the pop-culture figure is one of the ongoing challenges in studying the subject, and serious writers tend to treat sweeping claims about ancient unbroken lineages with caution.

Development Over Time

As Japan moved into the long peace of the Edo period and beyond, the practical demand for shinobi faded, and their skills passed into memory, story, and scattered transmission. The version of ninjutsu practiced today owes a great deal to the twentieth century, when teachers set out to organize and preserve what remained. The best-known figure in this revival is Masaaki Hatsumi, who founded a widely practiced organization and taught a system he traced to his own instructor and to a set of older ryu, or schools. Related organizations were later founded by his students and peers. The precise historical pedigree of these lineages is debated among researchers, but there is no doubt that they were the main vehicle by which ninjutsu reached a global audience.

That global spread accelerated through the late twentieth century, helped along by Western students who trained in Japan and brought the art home, and by a wave of popular fascination with ninja in film and media. Contemporary practice now ranges from schools focused on preserving traditional techniques and weapons to more self-defense-oriented interpretations.
